The Daily Data Diet: Information Creation in Numbers [Infographic]

In the digital world, we're crazy about information creation. Our world floats atop a sea of digital data that's expanding by the second. But how much are we actually producing? The infographic Data Never Sleeps produced by Domo.com has the answer, and it may surprise you.

First, let's look at a statistic. According to an article from VCloud News, we produce roughly 2.5 quintillion bytes of data worldwide every day. This is enough to fill 10 million Blu-Ray discs, a stack measuring 4 times the height of the Eiffel Tower. So what's making all this happen? Is it social media? Online searches and transactions? The truth is information creation takes all of these things and more to reach such astounding levels of generation.

The Future of Information Creation

Where is all this leading? We're not short on predictions for information creation in the future, to be sure. Here are some jaw-dropping stats courtesy of Forbes:

  • Data is growing faster than ever before and by the year 2020, about 1.7 megabytes of new information will be created every second for every human being on the planet.
  • Within five years there will be over 50 billion smart connected devices in the world, all developed to collect, analyze and share data.

When you consider also that 90% of our current information creation happened in the last 2 years, it's easy to make your own prediction.

The Internet is a living breathing thing—let's care for it like one.
