Chances are if you're a teacher that you've considered how to continue to engage students once classes are over for the day, or even the year. Above all, beyond our daily interactions with learners, we'll always want their curiosity to continue and this is a commendable mindset. So what about a selection of apps that can make this happen?

Thankfully, Dave Saltmarsh from eSchool News has recently come up with a terrific list of apps that are designed to engage students during "rainy days, road trips or any time in between." Check out the links he has compiled below.

15 Apps to Engage Students Outside School

Apps for Grades K–5

  • Osmo: Hands-on play through the iPad with offerings like Newton, Masterpiece and Coding.
  • LEGO® Education WeDo 2.0: Physical LEGO materials combined with virtual coding for some fun PBL activities.
  • Comic Life: Lets kids create a unique comic with their own photos, using fonts, templates, panels, balloons, captions and more.
  • SPRK Lightning Lab: Combines virtual coding with robotics for students, instructors, and parents.
  • Swift Playgrounds: Provides youngsters the opportunity to learn Apple’s programming language Swift in a fun and interactive setting.

Apps for Grades 6–12

  • Star Chart, Night Sky, Solar Walk and National Parks by National GeographicFrom stargazing to navigating through space and time, these apps allow users to immerse themselves in the limitlessness of the world around them in unique and inspiring ways.
  • Duolingo: A fun, free way to pick up a new foreign language using science to help guide the learning process.
  • GarageBand and Edjing: Allows music lovers to record their own music creations by utilizing vast sound libraries that include instruments and voice options.
  • Paper and Prêt à Template: Perfect options for those with a flair for the arts—a student can easily showcase their creative artistry using a vast assortment of drawing tools.
  • Swift Playgrounds: As students develop their coding skills, they can take on a series of challenges and step up to more advanced playgrounds.
  • Coach’s EyeBy providing instant video feedback, the app allows students to capture and review their strengths, as well as see areas for improvement, while engaging in their favourite sports.
